Our team is working hard to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible. Power and internet outages make communication difficult, but rest assured they are doing their best in these challenging circumstances. Because of this, please expect slower-than-usual responses from our Santa Fe team in Ukraine.

Russia

Over the weekend, the Polish border crossing ‘Bobrovniki’ had the lowest compliance rate for passing trucks. This resulted in the largest truck build-up on this route to Poland ever. Cars continued to queue at the border crossing for two days, and border crossing control services only permitted a quarter of all vehicles to enter their territory. On their way to EU countries, 50% more trucks passed through Lithuanian and Latvian checkpoints.

Furthermore, all personal belongings are classified as high-risk cargo at Russian border crossings. As a result, all cages containing personal items must be x-rayed, increasing the time it takes to clear Polish customs.

Haulage availability at German ports and terminals is becoming a real concern. Container transportation, via road & and rail now require booking a further 2 – 3 weeks in advance. During this time, additional port storage charges can accumulate, resulting in additional costs all around.

The majority of container shipments arriving into Germany, handled by Santa Fe, arrive via Bremerhaven, whilst utilising other ports can be considered this can often result in further delays.

These challenges are predicted to continue well into 2023.  Santa Fe with its network of freight suppliers and warehousing solutions will continue to find the best solution that minimises the impact of this disruption to its customers.

Our top priority is to ensure the safety of our customers and employees during the delivery of services. So, get in touch with your local Santa Fe Relocation representative or email emergency.support@www.santaferelo.com to discuss how we can support you with any of your relocation requirements.

After two years of challenges in international freight, where we have seen freight prices increase over 10-fold, shortages in container supply and port congestion causing delay and uncertainty, there are signs that conditions are beginning to improve. Freight prices have steadily declined since their peak in 2021, the time shipments spend in ports is falling, and the reliability of shipment timings has improved gradually over the last three months.

However, a note of caution must remain. Whilst shipping prices have fallen, they remain historically high. Inflationary pressures are being felt globally, and the benefits of government responses to the threat of economic recession are yet to be fully realised. With increasing costs across all aspects of the supply chain and continued workforce action, such as recent and ongoing strikes at UK, German, and US ports, the threat of disruption remains.

Whilst the cost of international freight is expected to fall [significantly], especially spot rates, already in 2023, industry experts and shipping lines expect the pressure and challenges experienced in international freight to continue into 2023 and beyond. This is particularly true of congestion on the US East Coast and in European ports, the fact that congestion has moved from seaside to landside (lack of availability of warehouses and chassis) and the fact that it may take longer to unwind congestion than originally anticipated. Our view is that while freight rates will decrease in 2023-2024, they may remain higher than the pre-pandemic freight rates.

Santa Fe offers the following recommendations

Advance planning
Be sure to book early. Santa Fe will assist with early scheduling to obtain the best timings and rates. We can also ensure that all the required paperwork is in order before shipping to minimise the chance of delays.

Transportation and storage
Consider alternative methods of transport, such as air freight for time-sensitive items. Storage can also help with the current uncertainty of timings. Santa Fe has access to multiple freight and warehousing locations throughout our global network and our carefully selected partners, giving our customers the widest choice of possible solutions.

Costs and timings
Be prepared to buffer your budget and allow for transit time changes. Santa Fe will do its best to ensure that moves arrive on schedule. Still, delays and unforeseen additional charges can occur in this unstable period.

Ukraine

There are no notable changes in Kyiv’s security situation; most institutions operate normally. There are still air raid alerts several times a day when people are supposed to take shelter. As far as we know, all moving companies face a gradual slowdown in activities because, inevitably, most people relocated during the summer. Santa Fe’s schedule remains busy throughout September and October, dispatching prepacked shipments awaiting the green light.

Russia

There are no significant changes regarding sanctions. Many global brands in Russia have resumed work, and many multinational companies have announced that they plan to return to work soon. Some international companies have temporarily introduced local managers, and some have simply changed their names. Because of these measures, we can see that the situation has stabilised, but there are still problems with international transportation, and transport prices remain high. Over the past two weeks, there has been increased control over exporting personal belongings on Russian borders. Almost all cargo is subject to 100% inspection.

Storage

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you need help with storage in Ukraine, Russia, or surrounding regions.

Between the 19th of September 2022 and the 3rd of October 2022, a strike action of union members at the Port of Liverpool is planned.

Although we believe disruption at the Liverpool port will be minimal, the strike may impact container arrival at other UK ports when vessels and haulage infrastructure divert. Therefore, schedule changes, delays, and last-minute updates could be expected.

Santa Fe is closely monitoring the situation to ensure customers are updated with any significant developments. If you have any questions, please get in touch with your local Santa Fe Relocation representative to discuss how we can support you with any of your relocation requirements.

An eight-day strike by workers at the UK’s biggest container port, Felixstowe, has been confirmed to take place, starting Sunday, 21 August 2022.

Around half the shipping containers entering the UK arrive via Felixstowe; whilst shipping lines look to minimise the impact by diverting vessels and utilising other ports such as London Gateway & Southampton, delays and schedule changes are inevitable.

The situation is regularly changing. Santa Fe will continue to monitor the situation, ensuring you and your assignee have the very latest information. If you have any questions, get in touch with your local Santa Fe Relocation representative to discuss how we can support you with any of your relocation requirements.

Shanghai’s Customs Bonded Warehouse will be temporarily closed for approximately one week from 25 July, 2022, due to sporadic local cases kept emerging in the Chinese commercial hub despite Shanghai had lifted the two-month lockdown in early June.

We believe that these measures will remain in place until the results of mass testing on Monday, July 25 are analyzed and verified.

The phased lockdown triggered by the COVID-19 outbreak at the Customs Bonded Warehouse will remain in lockdown for the time being, as the authorities verify and analyze the test results. The streets of Yi Xian Road, East side of Yin Gao Road, and San Men Road will be shut down, trucking and linehaul activities will be suspended.

Future epidemic control measures will be rolled out based on the test results. But until then, Customs Officials and employees are required to stay at home. Certain districts of Shanghai will go through intensive nucleic acid tests twice in the coming three days of this week.

Please expect the negative impact to customs clearance. Vessel schedule delays and extra charges should be expected.

Import and export customs clearance via Shanghai port for all ongoing shipments is expected to be impacted, with delays incurring potential storage charges, container re-loading and off-loading charges.

We will actively monitor the situation and adapt accordingly to do whatever we can to support you and your assignees. We will keep you informed of any further developments.

Please contact Santa Fe China for further information.

Ukraine crisis | International moving update 21 July 2022

Ukraine

Foreigners who lived and worked in Ukraine are now rapidly leaving Ukraine. There is a heightened demand for our packing services and we will rely on our relentless drive to meet the demand for this service over the next few months. Customers often underestimate the volume, so packing times and prices are challenging to predict. Planning is complex because everyone wants to leave their accommodation as soon as possible to avoid paying additional rent. And their preference is to store their household goods in our secure warehouse until the necessary documents are ready for customs clearance in the destination country. All packing jobs must be done without a pre-move survey and in the customers’ absence.

The security situation remains unstable as Russia continues bombing Ukrainian cities every day. Fuel isn’t readily available and prices have almost doubled to what they were before the war. Air raid alerts are daily in Kyiv and other prominent Ukrainian cities. During air raid alerts, people must take refuge in bomb shelters, meaning all shops, petrol stations and subways have to close.

There is a curfew in Kyiv from 23:00 until 05:00. All local suppliers only work on full pre-payment terms and subcontractors are paid weekly. Although civil air transportation is still blocked, shipping by sea is possible via Constanta port in Romania.

Russia

The economic situation in Russia remains unstable due to the emergence of new laws and regulations, which are continually changing. Therefore, we have to have to monitor the status constantly. The ruble exchange rate has strengthened because exports outnumber imports. This is not beneficial at all to Russian exporters.

Since decrees were adopted that activate imports to Russia under various schemes. This will probably weaken the ruble soon. Many companies remain operational in Russia and continue their activities by changing logistics supply chains. Many foreign companies from Europe and the US have withdrawn their business from Russia for political and logistical reasons. Some companies have suspended their work and are waiting to see how the situation unfolds. A significant number of companies stopped their activities or announced their withdrawal from the Russian market but have recently started to work again in Russia. Therefore, a considerable number of foreigners remain in Russia. We still see many foreigners leaving Russia temporarily.

Transport options remain limited due to sanctions imposed by the European Union. Belarusian and Russian carriers do not have access to Europe, so the cost of transport options has increased several times recently. We do not observe significant changes in our work in Russia, except for the challenges mentioned above with international transport. There is no panic, though, as we adapt to these modern realities.
